Apex National Body

It's Origin

Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) is the apex national body for mountaineering and allied sports. What was initially formed as the 'Sponsoring Committee of the Cho Oyu Expedition', transformed into the IMF on 5th January, 1961, as we know it today.

IMF supports, promotes and regulates national and international climbing and mountaineering in the Indian Himalayas. We are affiliated to the UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) as a member federation, thus representing them in India. IMF has been given statutory powers by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to regulate mountaineering. We are also affiliated to the UAAA (Union of Asian Alpine Association). We are the recognised National Federation for Sport Climbing, a competitive Olympic sport, under the International Federation of Sport Climbing – World Climbing (affiliated to the International Olympic Committee), and also affiliated to World Climbing Asia (affiliated to the Olympic Council of Asia).

IMF is also engaged in mountain protection work, knowledge building and creating awareness of the Indian Himalaya.
